Carbon & Mild Steel Plate
Farwest stocks an extensive ASTM A36/A709 and ABS inventory that meets domestic requirements.
Carbon and mild steel plates and ABS steel plates differ in their intended applications and properties. Carbon steel is primarily composed of iron and carbon, with carbon content ranging from 0.05% to 2.0%. While mild steel, or low carbon steel, contains about 0.05% to 0.25% carbon by weight. Carbon and mild steel plates are versatile and commonly used for structural and general fabrication purposes due to their weldability, machinability, and affordability. These plates are ideal for construction projects, storage tanks, and machinery.
In contrast, ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) steel plates are specifically engineered and certified for use in marine and offshore industries. They are designed to meet stringent standards for strength, durability, making them essential for shipbuilding, hulls, and offshore platforms. The key distinction lies in ABS steel’s enhanced toughness and certification for maritime use, while carbon and mild steel plates are better suited for broader, non-marine applications.
